I’m not quite sure where summer went! I had intended to update the blog sometime over that period and here we are into November and I am only just getting around to catching up. Some lovely friends who stayed in Meadow Cottage last New Year and live in the Ukraine e-mailed to say that they read the blogs we post. I suddenly realised that I had neglected this important task for too long and needed that reminder from that dear family to get myself sorted. So here at last is an update! Well here on the North Coast the weather held beautifully throughout July, September and October with just August being a disappointment! Three months of settled weather out of four anywhere in the British Isles is pretty good going so we were happy as we trust were our guests.
The garden is now maturing well with the lawn really thick and green. Along the approach to Meadow Cottage we have laid a three foot strip of lawn the whole length of the driveway with a hedge on the opposite side. This makes the drive up to the property look far more civilized than last year when one side was all overgrown with weeds and brambles. A month ago we had all the hedges cut down including the one overlooking the front fields. This had been neglected over the past few years so we had it reduced by five feet and it has made a vast improvement allowing even better views across country from the cottage. During the autumn months we have planted hundreds of bulbs of one type or another and will be eagerly waiting spring to see the results. We have a bank that runs from the lawn to the hedge at the front of the property and this has always been a bit of a difficult thing to know what to do with. We finally decided on a course of planting some old lavender’s along it as well as some half price or less (the type of shopping I like) plants from the local garden centre. We then sowed the whole bank with a wildflower mix so once again look forward to next summers results. The wild flower mix that we planted on Carragh Road either side of the entrance gave a wonderful display of predominantly yellow flowers from July until the last ones are just dying back now in November. We hope that more colours will materialise next spring.
Inside the cottage we also finally got rid of the far too small built in fridge replacing it with a large cupboard. This provides a bit more storage accommodation in the kitchen whilst the large retro style fridge freezer we introduced last year gives more than adequate provision for those items that need to be kept cool. As some who stayed here last year will know we had a small problem with the shower leaking due to it being poorly fitted when installed. After two visits from an expert we hope that this problem is now resolved and that less water will encroach onto the floor and walls than was previously experienced. For the many that mentioned to us the loose toilet seat (that made you sea sick whenever you sat down) that has now been replaced with a high class model that seems to stay solid when in useJ!
We have had some wonderful people staying here over the summer from families to friends and couples. These have come from as far away as Australia, South Africa, America and nearer home such as Germany, and Belgium. We are delighted to welcome all especially if they have consideration for the cottage and the quality of the materials and furnishings provided. We have had some very complementary reviews from many who have stayed and although we appreciate them and are thankful for them we are not going to rest on our laurels. We really want to maintain that high standard of comfort and cleanliness that we seek to provide so we have one or two ongoing projects that we hope to incorporate in coming months. It will be a case of watch this space to see what changes come about first.
Meadow Cottage is still available for the back end of 2014 so if you fancy a short (or longer) winter break do get in touch. We are also now getting rapidly booked up for the summer months of 2015 which is great and encourages us that we must be doing at least one thing right! If you are thinking of staying in 2015 we suggest that you have a little look at the availability calendar and book your dates sooner rather than later.
We do look forward to having your custom during 2015 and being given the privilege of meeting many new friends
